Into the future with tofu
“Can you help me buy some tofu for tonight’s dinner, Nicky?” my mother shouted. “I’ll go now!” I replied. I grabbed my wallet and went off to the market.

As I was walking down towards the market, the world around me had changed. In the streets, I could not see any people. Instead, the place seemed to be full of robots. Some of them looked like people, but most of them were not. There were also some robot animals. The shops were selling ...
The three Gorges Dam: a metaphor for China
THE Yangtze River (揚子江) meanders gracefully through the heart of China, almost splitting the entire country into half with its beautiful bends and bows. Traversing this monumental 3,000-mile feat of nature is a long, formidable journey. But it is a journey with many rewards, for the Yangtse River tells us a story. From the barren lands of Qinghai (􀚡􀤎), to the flourishing metropolis of Shanghai 􀀉􀉪􀤎), the Yangtse is a metaphor of ...
Nice teachers
MY Chinese teacher is called Mrs Ko. She is beautiful and kind. She has two big eyes and long hair and she usually wears a colourful dress. She is also a gentle woman who never scolds anyone. Instead, she often gives gifts to students and uses puppets in class.

Her best friend is my religious education teacher. She is called Mrs Yuen and I often see her talking to Mrs Ko. Mrs Yuen is also as nice as Mrs Ko because she gives us gifts and uses puppets in class. Mrs Yuen has ...
high speed trains in china
I LOVE trains! As a 13-year-old Chinese teenager, I am thrilled by the development of high-speed railway networks in China. Not long ago when I visited Japan, I enjoyed riding on the famous Shinkansen high speed bullet trains, which are one of the most advanced trains in the world. I thought it would be great if China had trains like that. The good news is that now China has bullet trains too, and perhaps ours are better. Our Harmony Trains are faster, more comfortable, and f...
Money talks
WOULD you like to get some money and a free iPhone? Call up secondary school student ‘Hin Gor’ and you will get it! A secondary school student gave free iPhones and money to his schoolmates, if they agreed to call him Hin Gor. He did this because he wanted to impress a girl. When his teacher was informed of this, Hin gor was immediately stopped. In my opinion, the student wanted to win power and prestige, so he wanted his schoolmates to call him Hin Gor. His schoo...
Be aware of a light pollution
LIGHT pollution is becoming a serious problem in Hong Kong. In recent years, many skyscrapers, shopping centres and residential buildings have been built. The title of “Pearl of the Orient” has been given to Hong Kong but its over-development could cause serious light pollution. Its negative effects can be checked by examining the quality of sleep and health of the residents. Light pollution refers to the excess strong light that is given out and which is harmful....
Globalisation and its adverse impacts
GLOBALISATION makes markets cosmopolitan and enterprises richer and more powerful, as countries are incorporated by means of trade, businesses and even cultural events. But although globalisation is establishing a golden age for businesses and linking traditions and cultures from various countries, there is still a contingency for it to fail us. It is good because it has reduced trade barriers and cultural boundaries and enabled the exports and imports of a country to augment...
Should Hong Kong host the 2023 Asian Games?
HONG KONG’s aspirations to bid for the right to host the Asian Games in 2023 have raised a lot of public concern. Some think that holding the games can promote sports development and social cohesion in the city, boost its international status and create more jobs. However, there are many drawbacks we need to consider.First, the government expects the project to cost around HK$46 billion. The cost is not actually accurate as the infl ation in the next 13 years has not be...
Why I live in the sea
I LIVE in the sea now. If you ask me why I am living in the sea, I will tell you that it’s because it is a very peaceful place.

I have built a house in the sea. It is very colourful because I used 500 shells to make it. I am surrounded by so many sea animals. Some of them swim past and others are my neighbours. I like these special sea animals and often feed them.

I think it is very crowded and noisy on the land; it is often so noisy that when I stay there, it kee...
An unforgettable journey

LAST year, I went to New York in the United States with my parents. At the airport, I saw some people waiting at the emigration counter to collect their boarding passes. We went into a restaurant to have a meal.

While going towards the terminal gate my parents where we will sit on the flight. They said we were going to sit in the economy class. When we reached the terminal, we had to wait for ten minutes before boarding.

The flight was 20 hour...
